Who are the Pen Pushers of America, Golf Society?

We are part of the international golf society, The Pen Pushers, founded over 20 years ago in the south of England by a gentleman by the name of Raymond Deem. Ray is still the chairman and main organizer of the Society today. Golf Societies are fairly common in England and uncommon in the United States. The Pen Pushers of America is a spin-off, local chapter, centered in northern Virginia, USA. An American (John Sullivan), while on international assignment in England was invited to be a member of Pen Pushers in 1998. When he returned to the States in 2001, he explained the golf society concept to several friends and the first event was held in June of 2002. We begin the 2006 season, our 5th season, having held 32 tournament events.

Our members are gentlemen who enjoy playing golf, competition and social events. We like to have a good time and test our skills. We are committed to “real golf” according to the “Rules”, no “gimmies”, no “Mulligans”, playing by the book. We do not discriminate based on ones handicap. Our goals include; improving our own game as well as elevating our member’s knowledge of rules and improving their skills as well. Good sportsmanship is a key requirement for membership. Our members are located primarily in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area, but we also have active members who live in Indiana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Georgia participating in our events. Our events are held at golf courses in northern Virginia but we have also done international trips to compete against the Brits.

What’s a Golf Society?

A golf society is an organization with regular members who get together once per month, at different golf courses, to have a golf competition and social gathering. Pen Pushers of America meet 9 times per year (March – November). Our competitions are based on a modified Stableford format, at 100% of handicap. If you do not have an established USGA handicap, we will establish one, and we maintain member handicaps for events. Our events include awards for Champion, Longest Drive, Closest to the pin, Birdie prizes, as well as Goat-boy (lowest score). Event entry fees include the costs of green fees, range balls, cart fee, prizes and a light meal during the awards ceremony. We also conduct modest fund raising activities, (raffle and putting competitions), to raise funds to donate to charity. We are a non-profit, fun-loving, golf club managed by a committee of volunteers with specific and general roles. Roles include; General Chairman, Captain, Vice-Captain, Event Coordinators, Website and Communications Chairmen, and a Membership Chairman.

We also have an end of season party and recognize those players who have excelled throughout the season.

How much does it cost to become a Pen Pusher?

There is a nominal annual membership fee of $50 and events fees are generally about $75. We want this to continue to be the best value in golf.
